Scan of a letter from Transnistria to Bukovina, brought by Dr. Albert Twers

Dear Mr. Hanek!
You’re probably wondering why I’ve waited this long to write to you, but I’ve really not had any time, I wasted entire days before I finally managed to stay here in Mogilow. Prices have soared here and bread is so hard to come by and even then a small loaf costs 500 lei and is black as coal, 400 g of butter cost 300 lei and an egg costs 24 lei, but they’re just as hard to come by. For days on end there hasn’t even been a morsel of bread in our room; you just can’t come by any.
Now, dear Mr. Hanek, I beg of you, if you are at all able, send us some food. Butter, sugar, 1 kg of baking soda,

a few lemons, pocket batteries, sour salt, paprika and, if possible, a little jam. I’m sending 1,200–1,400 lei to Wasiliu and if you can, collect it and buy me the things I’ve just mentioned. We’ve lost half of our luggage. Your sister and brother-in-law, who are here with us, have also lost 15 of their 16 parcels and now have only the clothes on their backs. I would now ask of you, dear Mr. Hanek, if it’s not too much trouble, to please be so good as to collect 4,000 from the lawyer, Mr. Bologa for me and if he’s able to, he should help by providing us with a larger amount. If we should come through all this with our health intact then I’ll repay him to the last penny. If you should wish to send me something, then please contact Larionescu

or Baculeanu, one of Musin’s brothers-in-law. I’ll end my letter here by sending my kindest regards to you and your sister. Yours, Bendit
