Scan of a letter from Transnistria to Bukovina, brought by Dr. Albert Twers

Dearest Mali!
I’ve written to our parents in Landhausgasse once already and now I want to write to you. I don’t know whether I’ll write to you soon because then you’ll have to pay 500 lei for the letter and I’m aware that neither you nor our parents can afford that. In the other letter I already provided you with a description of my situation and now I’m writing again. I beg you, do everything you can to save us, otherwise we’re doomed. And you can sell everything, the silverware (at our parents’ house), the furniture and whatever else, and don’t send rubles, send lei but of course only if you can help me. I have to hand over part of my engagement present to save Sigmund, and I’d hand over the rest as well if need be, I’ve mentioned that to you. We have nothing to eat here and the prices have risen so high that farmers don’t want money, just goods. I’ve lost my bags; I couldn’t carry both the child and the bags because we had to go on foot and Sigmund couldn’t carry his bag as it was too heavy for him, and so we only managed to salvage an eiderdown quilt. And so we have only the clothes on our backs, the child doesn’t even have a real pair of shoes, just slippers, and that’s how we look. Please Mali, go to Jonas, he might know some soldiers who can help us; tell her about us, tell her that I’m begging her to save us and that of course her efforts won’t go unrewarded. Many people have already returned home from here, some of them have been taken by German soldiers and some have been helped along by relatives in Chernivtsi. So you see, people are fending for themselves, so save us, Mali, and if there’s no other way, at least the child and myself – do everything you can. If you’re able to then send a package, most of the sugar and bacon for Erika should go to Lina, Blanka, Heini or possibly to Jolanna, or to Natan. I beg you, try everything, talk to the German soldiers because it could well be that one of

them has a car and could do it, I know that this sort of thing has happened before. Try it for Nastasi too, Kuza is supposed to go there. So once again, do everything you can. My love to you and our parents. How are they, are they in good health?
Write a few lines to our parents.
Much love, Netti.
