Scan of a letter from Transnistria to Bukovina, brought by Dr. Albert Twers

Dear Mum,
As you can see, Dr Weisner has written on my behalf, as I´m not capable of describing our fate myself. Living on 8 potatoes a day, which can only be cooked with difficulty. We have run out of strength completely, we have no fat or anything else nutritious to eat, not even tea. Please, unless you manage to send us money and food soon, we will die of hunger. People from Suceava and Gurahumora get money and food but we don´t even get news. Nor can we stay here, we are being chased into a village and who knows, if we won't get looted by the farmers. Obviously we're snowed in. It´s already deepest winter here. The Landwehrs, Merangasse 10, often send over money and parcels . We haven´t taken our clothes off since we left home. What´s on our bodies is still ours. I once again beg you urgently to do everything possible to send us money. Jörg and Ilse are already utterly debilitated, lying on the floor all day long, starving and freezing. It is really unbelievable what we've been through since we left home – if we´ve washed twice I´d be surprised.
I send my love to all of you, if you wish to see us again, send us help right away,
Mela
