Scan of a letter from Transnistria to Bukovina, brought by Dr. Albert Twers

Dear Gutmann family,
You are probably wondering why I’m writing to you so unexpectedly and who knows where you expected me to be. Should we still call it “this world” or is it the reverse? How happy and enviable you are not to see and experience this misery and most horrific suffering. I hope with all my heart that you will be spared this misery for the rest of your lives. I’d be very grateful if you could help me by sending some money in these difficult times. I really don’t have anyone I can turn to to beg for help. I’ve written several times to friends in Bucharest, to beg for help too but didn’t receive any answer. I presume mail is not getting through. How are you my dear? I think of you very often, of sweet Ralph and Piperl. I dreamt of you recently, in fact I dreamt I was coming back to class, it was summer and Ralph gave me flowers. If only that were to really happen! Please help me a little if you want and can. No matter how sad and hopeless the present might be, the future may offer us the pleasant possibility of meeting again and I will repay you for everything in thanks. I’m very sorry that

before our departure I was so awful as to not to bring our belongings to you. I was just so intimidated by those ordinances at the time. Please, dear Mrs. Gutmann, be so kind as to speak to Mrs. Feld, the Schädel family and the Stern family from the brewery, maybe they can help us a little too, they have been customers of ours for a long time. – Imagine, you can get anything to eat, one loaf of bread is 500 lei and you can’t even get by. One potato is 2 rubles, etc. Isn’t that real annihilation? I wouldn’t trouble you with my miserable story but I really don’t have anyone I can turn to. Please don’t be angry with me even if you have many worries yourselves. Kind regards and don’t forget your
Betty who thinks of you often

My dear, sweet Ralph,
I think of you and Piperl so often and I so wish to see you! But only in Radauti or elsewhere because here it’s not nice. Are you studying and with whom? Keep everything I’ve been at such pains to teach you in your little head and keep studying as often as you can. It’s important to keep going, my dear! Do you think of me sometimes? When I talk about you, it makes me cry. Now, too, I am writing with tears in my eyes. Write to me, it would make me very, very happy. I hug you and Piperl in my head and send you my fondest love,
Betty

Dear Dr. Gutmann,
If you want to be so kind as to write to Fora Sector Calea Mosilor 365 and tell her to send us, by whatever means possible, some money via Sommer Wolf, str. Oituz No. 2. The mail doesn’t always arrive, I’ve already written a lot of letters. That’s a relative, Rennberg from Radauti. Please do that for me, I will never forget what you have done. Thank you very much and kind regards,
Betty
