I am in Mogilow, Transnistria, with my family; we’re poor, without food; unfortunately this is what it has come to. The food is immensely expensive, 1 kg of corn flour costs 250 lei, 1 loaf of bread 500 lei, 1 l of oil 500 lei, etc. There’s no sugar to be had at all. We have to trade the few clothes and little linen we own for food. We are doomed people; but we cling to all our good friends. I wish you could send me some food. You could only send things via the great patronage which is Rudich’s brewery – letters, money and packages – because the Margoschez’s are here as well. –
I don’t want to dictate to you what sort of food, of course it should be food that doesn’t take up much space, as well as: Ichtijol ointment, potash, sour salt, Likorine , wheat semolina. – We don’t need cocoa and coffee, these are luxuries so we’ve given them up – nevertheless I would like to eat a piece of chocolate once in a while; unfortunately – where – forever ? If you want to know what life is like here, ask the messenger to tell you about it. No words can describe it, you have to see it with your own eyes. I would really like to write to you in more detail but no one wants to send the letters for me. Perhaps you will visit us yourself. My dear, my love, make sure you get in touch with someone to send me something; but if all of you could come, one day, I would be happy and it would do you good. – How are you and your dear loved one?
