Şagherot, 17/XII
Our Dears,
I think that you reveived the p[ost]c[ard] I had sent to you on our departure from Dorohoi. We are in the Ukraine, in a small town called Şagherot, 60km from the Dnjestr (River). We are living in utter misery, having no clothes and no roof over our heads, we lost everything on the way. I changed mezimen at home, and we made a mistake. Everything is v[ery] expensive here, a bread is 30 rubles, that is 1,200 leu. For the time being, I have no opportunity to write to Botoşani. I therefore ask all relatives, who have the possibility/who possibly can, to help us out with Romanian money, so that we won´t die of hunger. And write to Fany and Irma later, so that they will return the money to you.
Father and aunt Sura are with me. The poor ones are experiencing bad times in their old age. How are things with Iosif and Roza? We still knew from back home that her condition had changed, please send me the address. Roza´s sister is here as well, but in a different city. We inquired of Malvina, Rosela and her beloved ones and someone assured us that they are in a small town far away from here, but they have horse-carriages from home with things and they are alright as they have been here for a while already. I think that we will meet up with them soon.
I ask you once again to do everything possible to entrust the courier with all the help you can offer us at the arrival of this letter, so that we won´t die of hunger. We have no other opportunity than this person, who belongs to a well respected family here. If it´s possible for this person, I ask you to give him/her mens´underwear; for me and for father, so that we have something to change. When I came back from the camp, I left a parcel of my underwear and clothes with my David in Botoşani, but I have no opportunity to pick it up.
Best wishes for good health to all our loved ones, our suffering shall be yours too.
Wishes from father, aunt Paulina and the children.
In love, Meier Moscovici.
