Scan of a letter from Transnistria to Bukovina, brought by Dr. Albert Twers

To Dr Eduard Kissel, advocate, Suceava,
Reg Ferdinand St 58

Dear Children,
We have written many times before, but haven´t heard from you except the few lines in Dr Taster´s letter. Apparently the mail service to the south of the Bukovina has been stopped. From Cernauti and from Ryat people get mail, parcels and, through a courier, money too. Mrs Rat Geller will send you this letter through her brother from Cernauti. Please write to us with his help, as we crave for news from you and are deeply worried. We are – as is Baba – well, but quite rundown: living in a small hole with a mud floor, both sleeping on a door above 4 chairs, eating frugally, and yet the money is running out, as bread costs 20 ruble, 16 kg wood 20 ruble and even water costs money. We are with the Kirmaiers and Rosenfelds; Adolf is in the neighbourhood with Bagens. We were hoping to be home at Christmas, but it seems as if the great news that every now and then makes its way here is only fooling us. Some families however have been called home, like the Beiners from Suceava, with the help of Alexeanu as it appears. That´s why we turned to Mr Percavschi, Tiraspol, by letter, asking him to contact you. It is very uncertain, if he will ever receive the letter. I think Edi is trying hard to get us away from here, we are praying he´ll succeed, since circumstances are deteriorating here and the onset of winter is harsh. If Edi himself came here, he´d go home with

lots of money, for many families signed up wishing his intervention in Suceava. They would pay well to be added to the list de frig . Some of them already got in touch with him by letter. Dr Rosenfeld asks Edi not to pay out any money, as the written instructions are now to be disregarded. Tell us soon about what you are doing, whether you are well and if there are any prospects of us being freed one day. But the truth, no false comforting words, so that we can prepare ourselves accordingly, maybe open an Anisserie or find other work. I kiss you, P.

Sargovd, December 8th, 1941

My Dear Children, Papa started this letter yesterday and I´m continuing today. We spent a bad night with Baba and God knows if he will make it through another one. – Jeni Schapira and her parents are going to be [XXX] by her groom, Dr Schäfer from Lum l.d. . Write through Mr Landwehr, Cern[auti] Street of the 10th May, 10, as we haven´t received a note from you yet. Our money and nerves are stretched to breaking point and there is no opportunity for work. Are you, my dear, well?
With many, many kisses Mama
