Scan of a letter from Transnistria to Bukovina, brought by Dr. Albert Twers

To: The Salomon Stern family (brewery)

We’ve already written to you a few times, but haven’t received any reply. And we’re also surprised that you didn’t send us any greetings at all along with Regenstreif’s batch of pills. We’re asking you to do all you can to help us, if necessary by selling the things we’ve been storing at the neighbours’ house – they’re the ones who are looking after our dining room. Maybe the family from Bucharest or the Schapira family from Galatii would like to give us a helping hand. We’re already going hungry because we can’t afford enough food to fill us. We need at least 500 lei per day if we are not to starve, what with everything being so unbelievably expensive. For a long time now, we’ve been cooking everything without fat. Since people know that they have until 26 December to exchange the ruble, bread is in very short supply. Your dear parents are in Schavgorod and told us that they had sent over the money to Regensteif. But we haven’t got any confirmation, nor have we received any message from them at all. If you can, please send us some food, as it’s worth more than money – salt, sugar, semolina, etc.
David still has arthritis (a cold abscess) from Ataki and needs 20 calcium injections, which we don’t have here. How is your health, my dearest? Take my advice, eat and drink as much as you can. A few days ago I dislocated my right ankle. My foot is in a temporary wooden splint, hopefully not broken, but quite swollen at the moment. There’s no sign of any prospects for earning anything here, if only they would leave us in peace. We received a card from Clara from 2 December. Warmest wishes and much love to you and [XXX] see you again soon. Yours, Josef

My darlings!
I don’t think I have anything else to add. Please give the letter to Tema Rudich without fail. We’re enduring tremendous suffering and cling to [XXX] everything like someone who’s drowning alone. Dear Ward is in really bad shape and has been bed ridden for almost seven weeks now. Do everything you can to help us. By now everyone here is very weak. How are you? Thanking you greatly in advance, best wishes. Yours, Susi

There are lots of people who arrived in the Wina at Jägendorf without even the proper qualifications. If we were under the protection of the Regenstreif family, I wouldn’t mind paying for it and turning to hard labour to get authorization.
