I never pass up the opportunity to write to you. I’m begging you; write to me at least once to tell me about the goings-on in my house. Mr. Paul writes that, like all the others, you’re not interested. I’m really curious as to where you’re living. Have you given Mrs. Gerda anything from my abundant supplies? Please, if you can, send me what I really need in a small package: peppermint tea, caraway seeds, fennel tea, sour salt, whatever you can, send it either with Mr. Larionescu or with Dr. Twers. Mrs. Gerda sent very beautiful and valuable parcels through Dr. Twers but Mr. Bercu confiscated them and didn’t give the child even a sweet or a piece of chocolate, don’t even get me started on the butter. The only thing I wanted to give my child as long as I owned anything has been used up by Mr. Bercu and all the others. We will surely die of starvation, you can’t use money to buy food any longer, you can only get things here and there by way of exchange
Aren’t you coming to Mrs. Gerdas house? Why is everyone so upset? I’m very unhappy and ill and it deeply saddens me to see my child go hungry; I can still hang on but the child is already as green as a lemon. On top of that, Mrs. Berta is driving us into our graves. Take pity, at least on us, because there’s no one else we could ask for help. And don’t forget about the potash.
