Scan of a letter from Transnistria to Bukovina, brought by Dr. Albert Twers

Sargorod 6. XII.41
Dear Nusu!
I wrote to you yesterday, but I am not sure whether the letter will reach you that is why I write the same again with a small but very important addition. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the money and the package, both arrived just in time as we did not have a single Ban and nothing to sell. Today, Nusu, we are back where we were before your money arrived and no one is sending help not even a word from Iaga. I assume he had not had a chance. I do not know whether you have received any news from us, we have written many, many times, I t would be good, if you could get in touch with Jaga, so that she can help through you, I also wrote to Torica, but we have had nothing from him, despite a lot of correspondence from Bucharest. organize something for our rescue and help, sell everything you can (the piano, the candlesticks, etc.) and send us money, food, a few drugs and 1 – 2 woolen hats for us, Paula only has a summer coat. All our textiles were left behind with Mrs. Maria Lunguleac (str. Neculcea no. 15) in Gurahom[orului], and with Mrs. Rech the uniform, my new dress and my new shoes; it would be good if you could get these things and sell them, in case Jaga has not picked them up and sold them, and to send us the money, in either case, Nusu, contact Jaga, Pipi, Torica, Gh. Iosef (str. Toamnei 118), Dr. Krämer and help us; write to everyone to help us, otherwise we will die, Nusu! And now please write out the following request on typewriter, to sign in my name (possibly through Gh. Iosef) and to ask him to intervene for me (I repeat his address: str. Toamnei 118): Mr. Maresal, the below respectfully signed Lapise Alfred, Doctor of law, former Lawyer and former Lieutenant of the reserve, formerly resident in the town G[ura] H[umorului], district Cplg [Campulung], currently forced to reside in the town of Sargorod, district Moghilau, Transnistria; I venture to put the following petitin forward: On 9. II. 1940 I was called up to serve with the 16. Reg[iment] Dorobant and I was assigned to the II/VII workbat[allion], where I was in command of the V. Company. At the time I was resident in Chernivci where I practised as a lawyer since 1936, working as a lawyer in Stulpicani – Campulung for 17 years before that. I resided in my own house, str. Craiovei no. 7 and lived befitting of my rank. On 17.II 940 I set out with my bat[allion], where I served conscientiously until 6. VII 1940 and on that day whilst serving with the settled part of the regiment in the 1. garrison company as group leader until 24. VIII 1940,

when I was discharged. On 28/VI 940 my wife and child had to flee Chernivci, leaving all our belongings behind, to save themselves from the bolshevists. On 12 VI 40 I requested from the reg[iment] (settled part) to be allowed to stay in the country and declared to go withdraw from applying for repatriation. After my discharge I joined my family in G[ura] H [umorului], where we settled as registered refugees and in lived in very modest circumstances surviving with the help of friends until 10.X 1941 when we were evacuated together with the Jews from G[ura] H[umorului]. I beg you, Mr. Maresal, to be so kind and examine the claims that I make, I appeal to your proverbial sense of justice and beg to take into account the service I have done towards my country, the loyalty and devotion I have proven towards my Romanian native country, proven in abundance by my opposition towards bolshevism, by the fact that I left behind my possessions without hesitation, by my preference to live I poverty rather than under Bolshevik rule, by the formal withdrawal from the applying for repatriation to Chernivci. I beg you to take into account that I served as Austrian office in the front line in the world war, that I was wounded there and awarded several honorings for outstanding courage. I beg you to issue a repatriation order for me, my wife Paulina and my child Dorina as we do not deserve the fate of evacuation. Signature. And on the first page has to be written: “To the Leader of the Romanian State.” Please send the application with a trusted person, not by mail, Mr. Iosif or Mr. Col[onel] Cantemir and ask them to confirm that my claims are true, Mr. V. could confirm them just as well!! Be persistent. Please intervene where necessary to solve the problem. The attestation that describes the whole situation has been taken away from me. But I believe that it will be possible without this proof as it can be checked by the authorities, if one is persistent!!!

P.S. You couls also visit Mrs. Genia Strugariu, str. Munteniei (no.?), Jaga’s sister in law, she can also help, Mr. Jude[cator = judge] Strugariu could also sign the reuqest. We send our kindest regards and greetings and wish them the best of health. What I wish you – you know. Get together and help us otherwise we will be lost. Happy holidays. I kiss you from the bottom of my heart and also Pipi, yours, [signature]

Uncle Grigorovici could also help us.
