Scan of a letter from Transnistria to Bukovina, brought by Dr. Albert Twers

Dear Mr. Röder,
Only today have I found the time to write to you. Living in Moghilev is worse than being in prison. The price inflation is very high; people are starving to death. The ruble was exchanged for 40 lei on November 22, now one ruble is 3 lei. – From December 26 we will have the reichsmark. 20 rubles = 1 reichsmark. One loaf of bread is 4,000 lei here, 1 kg of sausage 5,000 lei, one kg of meat 2,000-3,000 lei. The people are starving to death + are perishing daily. It was said that pensioners would be sent back soon. The people from Bucharest claim that we should turn to the lawyer Chirila. Please try by all possible means to contact Mr. Chirila so that we are able to return home soon – otherwise we are going to perish here. If you could do that quickly – I would be forever grateful to you and your wife. The expense is of little importance. I beseech you, your wife – save us from doom. Along with Mr. Magid, Mr. Cinila [?] or Lucin who are also turning to you in thanks. Kind regards and love to your wife, L. Krämer

We are over 60 years old, pensioners

Dear Mr. Röder,
In my misery I implore you and your dear wife. It is claimed that pensioners have the right to repatriation. Have mercy for us, take pity on us! We are almost dead with hunger. Please go to the lawyer Chirila, he should take care of it. I have been retired for 3 years. The number of my savings book is 768. I will repay you for the expenses in sincere thanks. Have mercy for us! I will be forever grateful and pray for you and your wife’s health. Please get in touch with the lawyer Chirila when you receive this note. I implore you again to take pity on us and I send my love to you and your wife. Yours faithfully,
Krämer Rebeka
